The Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office released details from two separate shootings and announced arrests.
Here’s what we know about each case.
Man arrested after 1 hurt in shooting
Deputies responded to Barrow Street on Friday, Aug. 29, where a 24-year-old man was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He is in stable condition after being taken to a hospital.
Donald Ray Vondo, Jr., 26, of Plaquemine, was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Labor Day shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 injured
Deputies responded to a Labor Day shooting on Third Street in Maringouin, where a 24-year-old man was found shot. He was taken to a hospital and is currently in stable condition. Another victim, a 23-year-old man, was taken to a hospital in a private car but died from his injuries.
Ashton Bourgeois, 19, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
An investigation is ongoing. Deputies said more arrests are possible.
Sheriff: ‘Violence is not the answer’
Sheriff Brett Stassi addressed the violent crime during the holiday weekend in a statement.
“Violence is not the answer. This weekend, we lost a young man, two young men have been hospitalized at the hands of others who will ultimately lose their freedom. We must find a better way forward,” Stassi said.
He thanked deputies for their investigative work leading to arrests. He also thanked the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in cases.
