Salt Lake City man faces felony charges after allegedly opening fire on ex-girlfriend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — One man is behind bars after allegedly firing a gun multiple times at his ex-girlfriend early Sunday morning.

Juan Bernal, 47, was arrested on charges of aggravated assault, prohibited weapons conduct, property damage, and felony discharge of a firearm.

On Saturday, Aug. 30, officers with Salt Lake City Police Department responded to reports of a burglary at a home. They arrived to find a vehicle in the driveway with all of its windows destroyed.

Police say the victim, and Bernal’s ex-girlfriend, had given him a ride earlier that day. When she went to pick him up, he allegedly opened fire while she was still in her vehicle.

The victim told officers Bernal came to her home later that night demanding property from her. He then allegedly damaged the victim’s vehicle. Court documents show another resident at the home also heard Bernal damaging the car while the victim was at the residence with her six-month-old child.

According to charging documents, officers found three empty shell casings in the area where the victim claims Bernal fired a gun at her. The shooting was also captured on a neighbor’s camera.

Officers say Bernal has felony convictions out of California for manufacturing or possessing a dangerous weapon. Documents also show a federal firearm possession conviction from 2017.

Court documents also show Bernal has a history of domestic violence arrests in California and Utah. He is also documented as being a member of a “violent street gang.”

Bernal is being held without bail in the Salt Lake County Jail.

Charges are allegations only. All arrested persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
