LAFAYETTE, La. (
KLFY) — Activists in Lafayette marked Labor Day with more than just a celebration.
At Prejean Unity Park, dozens gathered Monday morning to call for stronger protections for workers and to demand that government leaders put people over profits.
The Lafayette rally was part of a nationwide campaign highlighting what organizers described as a “billionaire takeover” of government. Speakers said the goal is to fight back with collective action and ensure working families aren’t left behind.
“We are here to demand that the federal government respect that workers matter,” said Tricia Lebron, a congressional candidate. “We need health care. We need SNAP benefits for low-income households. We need a higher minimum wage so that we can raise our families and see more opportunities in our life.”
Protesters also tied their message to broader social issues, including women’s rights.
“I have four daughters and three granddaughters, and I want them to be healthy and be able to receive emergency care no matter what the situation is within their body,” Lebron said.
For community organizers, the event was also about building stronger connections and giving people an outlet for activism.
“I think this is a good way for people to realize there is a place to get out there and not only be around like-minded people but even try to find a small way to help improve things,” said Davis Richardson, a member of Love Your Neighbor.
Others in the crowd said the gathering was a way to keep attention on pressing economic concerns.
“It’s not something that’s ever going to get thousands of people out,” said rally attendee Dick Walsh. “But we are all legitimately concerned about what’s going on. And all of these issues, you can see here.”
Organizers said the Labor Day rally is one step in a larger, nationwide movement pushing for affordable healthcare, education, and fairness for working families.
