Sentient.xyz and its vision for open-source AGI

Sentient.xyz is the online home of Sentient, a decentralized protocol aimed at building an open, community-driven artificial intelligence network. According to the website’s documentation, the project is focused on developing what it calls the GRID (Global Research and Intelligence Directory), described as a network of specialized agents, models, data, tools, and compute contributed by a global community of builders. The documentation states that the GRID is designed to function like a distributed brain, coordinating modular AI components toward AGI-level output. AGI, or artificial general intelligence, refers to AI systems capable of performing any intellectual task a human can. In July 2024, it was reported that Sentient Labs raised $85 million in seed funding, co-led by Founders Fund, a venture capital firm co-founded by entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel, alongside Pantera Capital and Framework Ventures.¹

Where openness and utility meet in AI

Within the broader AI landscape, the Sentient.xyz documentation identifies two defining dimensions: openness and utility, and positions Sentient at their intersection. Closed platforms such as Anthropic and OpenAI are described as demonstrating high utility but remaining under centralized control, while open-source models are noted as offering transparency without community ownership. Sentient is designed to combine a community-owned architecture with a focus on high-utility applications, including tools for reasoning, search, and agent coordination. The GRID currently lists 110 or more partners, and Sentient-built components include Dobby, described in the documentation as the first model loyal to crypto, as well as Open Deep Search and ROMA, a meta-agent framework.

Sandeep Nailwal and Himanshu Tyagi, the co-founders of Sentient

Sentient was co-founded in January 2024 by Sandeep Nailwal and Himanshu Tyagi. Sandeep is also co-founder and executive chairman of blockchain payments company Polygon Labs.² Himanshu’s LinkedIn profile notes that he is co-founder and core contributor at Sentient, where he leads research, incentive design, and open products. He also holds a position as associate professor at the Indian Institute of Science, and is the founder of Banyan Intelligence, an AI company based in Bangalore.
