“The country was built by the people who do the labor. We are here today to celebrate them and fight for their rights and honor the work they have done,” said one participant.
Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, following years of advocacy by labor unions and activists to improve workers’ conditions.
Attendees of the rally emphasized the ongoing struggle for workers’ rights, citing historical issues such as child labor and current challenges like the erosion of workers’ rights and resources.
“Workers have always had to struggle for their rights. If people don’t get together and demand what is right for them, it’s not going to happen,” said another participant, highlighting concerns over issues like Medicaid.
The rally was sponsored in part by the Democratic Party of Santa Clara County and the Democrats of San Mateo County.
