PROVO, Utah (
ABC4) — Residents in Provo and other areas of Utah County will be paying more in property tax after a reported error in the county auditor’s office.
Officials with Provo City and Utah County announced on Saturday that the county auditor informed the Utah County Commissioners of an error in this year’s property tax bill. The error would cause residents in Provo to pay more than what was shown on their recent bills. Other cities may see slight increases as well.
The announcement did not state what exactly the error was or how much the increase will be.
“The Commission is deeply disappointed by this error and finds it unacceptable,” the announcement read. “As elected officials, we are committed to upholding transparency, accountability, and public trust in all county operations. This situation undermines those values, and we are determined to address it head-on.”
The announcement from Provo City also said that while this appears to be a first time occurrance in Utah County, similar errors have apparently happened in other jurisdictions.
Utah County Commissioners say they are working with the Auditor’s office to “manage and mitigate the impact of the [Auditor’s] error,” support affected taxpayers and implement safeguards that will prevent these errors in the future.
