A season ago, the Trojans raced out to a 4–0 start before adversity struck.
Five straight losses to close the schedule left Topeka at 4–5 overall and just 1–3 in Centennial League play.
“It’s a lofty goal, but we say we want to be the best program in the state in every aspect. On the field, off the field, and we’re not there yet,” head coach Jason Filbeck told 27 Sports. “We want to make strides towards that every day.”
The Trojans return a solid core of experience and believe they can match up with the league’s best. Their goal: not just to start strong again, but to sustain that level over nine weeks and into the postseason picture.
“We need to shine through adversity. We’ve hit a couple of roadblocks in the past couple of years, but we have to push through and keep going,” senior quarterback Zane Smith said.”
“As an offensive line man, I want my line to be violent this year,” senior tackle Jeremiah Lopez said. “We’ve been in the weight room lifting this summer, and we’re going to be better.”
Topeka High opens the season Sept. 4 against the West Pioneers, hoping to carry lessons from last year into a breakthrough campaign.
