LEESVILLE, La. (WNTZ) – A Leesville woman has been arrested in connection with the deadly shooting of a DeRidder man inside her home, according to the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Sam Craft said deputies responded to a welfare concern around 5 p.m. Saturday at a residence on Cedarbrook Circle. When deputies arrived, they were unable to contact the homeowner but reported hearing what sounded like a person moaning inside.

After forcing entry, deputies discovered a deceased man and an unresponsive woman on the floor. The woman, identified as 31-year-old Destini Leon of Leesville, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The man was identified as 22-year-old Micah Schmidt of DeRidder.

During the investigation, detectives interviewed Leon, who admitted to shooting Schmidt while he was visiting her home. A warrant was later obtained, and Leon was arrested on Aug. 25 after being released from the hospital.

Leon was booked into the Vernon Parish Jail on one count of second-degree murder. Bond has not been set.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
