Library Card Sign-Up Month has been celebrated since 1987, marking the beginning of the school year and promoting the importance of library cards for children.
This annual event aims to highlight the services that libraries provide, which extend far beyond borrowing books.
This year’s theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” emphasizes that libraries are accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or personal goals.
The library emphasizes that its facilities are not just for youth, but offer diverse services including free classes, job search assistance, homework help, streaming media, and cultural events. The program aims to foster a sense of community and promote lifelong learning.
During September, patrons can also replace lost cards at no charge, and parents with blocked accounts due to fees can register their children for their own library cards.
As part of the Library Card Sign-Up Month celebrations, special activities will be held at various branches. The Hosston Branch will offer a chance to sign up for a card while playing Library “Tic Tac Toe,” and the Belcher-Wyche Branch will invite patrons to decorate bookmarks upon registering. The Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch will host a “Little Adventures: Library Fun” storytime for babies and toddlers on Wednesday, September 3, at 10:00 a.m., along with an interactive book discussion for elementary-aged children on Monday, September 8, at 4:30 p.m.
All programs are free and open to the public.
Library cards are free, easy to obtain.
According to the library’s webpage, anyone who lives, works, attends school, or owns property in Caddo Parish may register for a library card.
To register online, visit their online catalog and click on the My Account link at the top of the page. When the box opens, click on the green “Register” link. Fill out the online registration form.
