The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) predicts 17 million people will take to the skies, and the auto club AAA is forecasting a busy weekend on the road, too.
Regardless of where you’re heading, it’s best to hit the road early. AAA said these are your best and worst times to travel this weekend:
| Date | Best Travel Time | Worst Travel Time |
| Thursday, Aug 28 | Before 1:00 PM | 1:00 PM – 8:00 PM |
| Friday, Aug 29 | Before 12:00 PM | 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM |
| Saturday, Aug 30 | 6:00 AM – 10:00 AM | 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM |
| Sunday, Aug 31 | Before 11:00 AM | 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM |

Plus, your wallet will thank you this holiday weekend as you fill up and head out, you’re paying less at the gas pump. Your price per gallon is down nationwide (avg. $3.21/gal) this year, including D.C. (avg. $3.26/gal), Maryland (avg. $3.16/gal), and in Virginia (avg. $3.04/gal).
“I’m getting close to like $3.00 for regular, sometimes, $2.90. In certain spots, you’ll get lucky, for like two $2.75,” DMV-area driver Stetson Randolph told DC News Now as he filled up at a pump in Alexandria on Thursday.
If you’re gearing up for takeoff along with 17 million other people, you can expect an easier experience in the TSA line. You can now keep your shoes on in regular security lines and TSA is also offering families a “BOGO $15 off” for signing up for TSA Pre-Check.
TSA predicts Friday is to be the busiest day at the airport.
“My flight was supposed to leave at 9:00 am, so I sat from 7:15 am to 12:15 pm waiting for a plane that was finally canceled,” said Patricia Anderson on Thursday, heading to California from Reagan National Airport (DCA), traveling with her small dog, Adam.
She was able to rebook and get on another flight on Thursday afternoon instead.
“It’s going to end okay. I’ll be spending the night in Palm Springs, not a problem. Adam and I, we’ve had some discomfort, but everyone has been so nice, honest to God,” Anderson said.
At Washington-Dulles International Airport (IAD), United Airlines said it’s added 10% more destinations, compared to last year, to meet current demand. The airline said Friday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Sept. 1, are expected to be their busiest days.
The airline said international travel is up 10% this holiday weekend, too. Their top destinations from Dulles this weekend are Orlando, Frankfurt, Rome, Boston, and London.
If you are looking to make a last-minute getaway, AAA said rental cars, hotels and flights are all cheaper this year than last year.
