One man is dead after an hourslong standoff in West St. Paul turned into an officer-involved shooting on Thursday.
According to authorities, St. Paul police were searching for a man wanted for multiple felony warrants, and just after 11 a.m., they found a motorcycle associated with the man on the 1200 block of Ottawa Avenue in West St. Paul.
St. Paul police surrounded the home the suspect was in and began evacuating other people out of the home, who confirmed the man was inside.
At around 2:15 p.m., South Metro SWAT took over command of the scene, and the suspect fired shots that hit armored SWAT vehicles and an officer’s handheld ballistic shield over the course of four hours.
The SWAT team used a phone, drones and robotics to try and negotiate with and get a visual of the suspect.
Even after multiple rounds of chemical irritants used by officers, the suspect continued firing at law enforcement through multiple windows.
At around 6:40 p.m., the suspect aimed at officers with a long gun, which prompted a South Metro SWAT officer to return fire, hitting the suspect.
The suspect was brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting and will release more information at a later time.
As a result, St. Joseph’s School, which was located a block away, went into lockdown.
