State lawmaker calls for states to observe permanent Daylight Saving Time

(WHTM) — The biannual spring and fall time switch may no longer exist in Pennsylvania.

A resolution proposed in the State Legislature would urge the U.S. Congress to require that all states permanently observe Daylight Saving Time year-round and eliminate the spring and fall time switch.

In a co-sponsorship memo, Rep. Joe McAndrew (D-32) claims that the sun will begin to set earlier in the day again, which leads to more electrical use in our homes, a lack of productivity in our workforce, and preventable safety risks. The memo also asserts that fatal vehicle crashes rise in the week after the time shift, largely due to sleep loss and circadian rhythm disruption.

Rep. McAndrew says states are permitted to opt out of Daylight Saving Time, but they are not permitted to observe it year-round.

The memo says adopting permanent daylight saving time will lead to steadier circadian rhythms and a reduction in seasonal mood issues, heart attacks, and strokes reported after clock changes. The resolution would also simplify transportation and communication industries that depend on consistent timekeeping, per the memo.

The document has not been submitted for introduction yet.
