The report shows that there were a total of 41,070 reports of suspected child abuse received in 2024, which was nearly 800 more than the previous year. Child Protective Services says the increase was anticipated following the decrease in reports during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While there were increases in some areas, there were also slight decreases in others. The report shows the reports of suspected child abuse that were substantiated decreased from 11.7% in 2023 to 11.6% in 2024.
The report cited sexual abuse as the leading category of substantiated abuse, followed by physical, with the most victims being from ages 5-9.
There were 60 fatalities related to child abuse cases in 2024, and 82 near fatalities.
Some central Pennsylvania communities were among the counties with the highest substantiated reports. Lancaster County took the second-place spot with 276 substantiated reports. York and Dauphin counties were also among those with the most substantiated reports, with 260 and 222, respectively.
