Investigation underway after infant found dead at Near South Side apartment

CHICAGO — A death investigation is underway following the death of an infant who was found unresponsive inside an apartment on the Near South Side on Wednesday morning.

Officers said the baby, a 6-month-old girl, was found unresponsive inside an apartment in the 2000 block of South State Street, on the Near South Side, just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Shortly after she was found, crews pronounced her dead on the scene.

While specific details surrounding the incident are unclear, officers have classified it as a “death investigation.”

Authorities have not yet identified the victim and autopsy results are currently pending.
