E-bike crash in Herriman sends rider to hospital with life-threatening injuries

HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC4) — A crash involving an e-bike in Herriman sent the rider to the hospital with critical head injuries, as he was not wearing a helmet.

The crash happened on 11800 S at 4805 West on August 26 at around 8:50 p.m., according to a news release from Herriman City Police.

A 24-year-old man was riding an electric motorbike eastbound on 11800 South on the shoulder of the road, and as he approached the intersection at 4805 West, he passed another vehicle on the right that was also traveling eastbound.

Another vehicle, a silver SUV driven by a 17-year-old, was traveling westbound and began to turn left onto 4805 west. The e-bike hit the front passenger side of the SUV, and the rider was thrown from the motorbike. He was not wearing a helmet.

Police received reports of the crash and responded to the scene. They performed first aid on the 24-year-old, and Unified Fire paramedics took him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The teenaged driver of the SUV stayed on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation into the crash. The investigation is considering speed, visibility, and safety equipment as factors in this incident. The e-bike appeared to be custom or modified, and it “does not fall into any of the regulated classes of electric or pedal-assisted bicycles as defined in state statute,” according to police.

The South Valley CRASH Investigators Unit is handling the investigation. It is a unit that shares resources between Herriman, Riverton, and South Jordan Police Departments that specialize in accident reconstructions and forensic evidence.

Herriman City Police said that they will not be releasing the identities of the individuals involved at this time. The condition of the 24-year-old is not known at this time.

This is another e-bike crash with serious injuries after other incidents over the past few weeks. An e-bike rider was killed in an accident in Riverton two weeks ago, and the next day, there was an e-scooter crash in Kearns.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.
