ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – School has been in session for a few days now, so students and staff are now getting into the daily rhythm. One new routine at Wylie ISD is a new bus route for Dyess Air Force Base students, and Superintendent Joey Light started the year with those students behind the wheel, making sure no student is left behind.

The district has experienced growth this year, especially with incoming students from Dyess AFB. Superintendent Joey Light said he took the first step to make sure every student is served.

“I really do enjoy driving a school bus, and I enjoyed the kids. They’re a lot of fun,” Light said. “A couple of years ago, there was some legislation passed that allowed military members’ kiddos to come to the school of their choice. We had never been able to serve Dyess Air Force Base properly.”

While it might not serve the majority, Light said to the students, it matters just as much.

“It’s not a lot of people. It’s about ten. We just think that’ll continue to grow as people learn about it and take advantage of it,” Light said. “We’re always looking at the kids and their needs, and we want to make sure we are continuing to work on their opportunities in the classroom.”

Light wants his staff and students alike to know he is on their side.

“I hope that everybody understands that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help. That’s my goal, whether it’s driving a bus, picking up trash, directing traffic, whatever it takes,” Light explained.

Looking towards the future, the district is working on multiple construction projects, including an additional campus. Construction on the district’s newest elementary campus is still on track to open for the 2026-27 school year.
