Minnesota health officials encourage precautions amid rise in West Nile virus cases

2 deaths, 20 confirmed cases of West Nile in MN

Health officials are urging Minnesotans to take precautions due to a rising in the number of West Nile virus cases across the state.

The Minnesota Department of Health says it has confirmed 20 cases of the virus so far this year and two of those affected have died.

West Nile virus is transmitted to people through a mosquito bite.

While health experts say most people who are bitten by infected mosquitoes will either have no symptoms or just a mild flu-like illness, it can become more serious. Less than 1% of people who are infected by the virus develop brain swelling.

Elderly people and those with weakened immue systems face the greatest risk.

The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District says August is when Minnesotans are most at risk because of an influx of two species.

To help protect against mosquito bites and West Nile virus, MDH offers the following tips:

Use insect repellents that are registered by the Environmental Protection Agency and contain up to 30% DEET.

Pre-treat clothing and gear with permethrin-based products.

Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Be extra cautious or avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, the peak feeding time for many mosquitoes, particularly from July through September.

Keep mosquitoes out of your home by maintaining screens on windows and doors.
