CPD: Anti-Semitic graffiti, stickers placed on properties around Hyde Park

CHICAGO (WGN) — There have been at least eight instances of criminals spray painting anti-Semitic graffiti or placing anti-Semitic stickers around the South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park since late June, according to the Chicago Police Department.

CPD said from June 23 to Monday afternoon, eight incidents have happened in Hyde Park where an unknown group of criminals has placed anti-Semitic stickers and/or graffiti on various pieces of property, such as a mailbox, stop sign, lockers and an emergency bell.

Incident dates and locations

  • 5100 block of South University Avenue on June 23, 2025, at 2:41 p.m.
  • 1300 block of East 53rd Street on June 24, 2025, between 1:00 A.M. and 2:00 a.m.
  • 1300 block of East 54th Street on June 24, 2025, at 10:07 p.m.
  • 1200 block of East 53rd Street on June 29, 2025, at 8:57 p.m.
  • 1500 block of East 55th Street on June 30, 2025, at 11:25 a.m.
  • 1600 block of East 55th Street on July 22, 2025, at 9:52 a.m.
  • 5000 block of South Greenwood Avenue on July 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
  • 1300 block of East 53rd Street on Aug. 25, 2025, at 2:20 p.m.

What police say you can do

  • Keep the perimeter of your property well lit
  • Report suspicious activity immediately
  • If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information
  • Remember any unique physical characteristics of offender
  • Never pursue a fleeing offender, provide the information to the police
  • Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible
