Dawn Conley filed a lawsuit Aug. 13 seeking control of parcels at 5502 and 5498 Rose Hill Road, which have a combined assessed value of $5,030.
The move comes four months after attorneys for Conely asked a judge in Georgetown County to seize the assets of Moody, the man convicted of abducting and killing her 17-year-old daughter in 2009 while she was on spring break on the Grand Strand.
Conley sued Moody in January 2023, and a jury awarded her $700 million — $200 million in actual damages and $500 million in punitive damages — after a trial in February.
According to Conley’s Aug. 13 complaint, Moody transferred the parcels to Vause and a man named Brian Cooper on Oct. 20, 2022.
“Debtor (Moody) conveyed his interest in the Property in exchange for no consideration while knowing that Debtor owed a debt to Plaintiff. Debtor’s actions were taken in direct response to being indebted to Plaintiff. Upon information and belief, Debtor fraudulently transferred the Property in an effort to put his assets outside the reach of his creditors, including Plaintiff,” the lawsuit says.
At one point during February’s civil court proceedings Moody expressed remorse for raping, kidnapping and killing Drexel in 2009 after she came to Myrtle Beach from Rochester, New York, with friends for spring break.
“I’m at a loss for words. I mean,” Moody said. “I just have so much regret. I’ve realized it doesn’t matter how sincere I am about how I feel about things I’ve done. It’s just not enough.”
Moody was convicted of murdering Drexel in April 2009 in Georgetown County. Conley sued Moody in January 2023 for intentional infliction of emotional distress, blaming him not only for taking the New York teenager’s life but for lying about it for years as the case drew national attention
After years of tracking down tips and searching for Drexel, authorities charged Moody with murder in May 2022 after confirming that remains found in a wooded area along Old Town Avenue in Harmony Township were those of Drexel, who was last seen alive in Myrtle Beach.
Meanwhile, Vause is serving 18 years in federal prison for lying to the FBI during its investigation into Drexel’s murder.
