The San Pablo Police Department responded at 9:42 a.m. to the area of 20th Street and Sanford Avenue, one block from Downer Elementary School, after a witness reported a boy pointing a handgun at a vehicle and hearing gunshots. After the shooting, the suspect and the victim, or victims, fled in opposite directions.
“Due to the reported close proximity to Downer Elementary School, an SPPD officer responded to the campus to contact school officials, and the campus was placed on lockdown as a precautionary safety measure,” San Pablo PD said.
Detectives identified a juvenile suspect believed to be the shooter. A search warrant was served at a home on the 1800 block of Wilcox Avenue where a 22-year-old man, identified as a family member to the boy, was arrested for suspicion of accessory to the crime, police said. According to authorities, evidence related to the shooting was found at the residence.
“Detectives were able to establish the location of the juvenile suspect, who was attending class at Richmond High School, where he was quickly located and taken into custody without incident,” San Pablo police said.
The 16-year-old boy was not named due to his age. He was booked into Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall on a firearms-related charge, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation determined that the shooting was targeted. It is unknown if the victim, or victims, were injured in the incident.
