WATCH: Utah Highway Patrol responds as elderly driver travels the wrong way on I-15

UTAH COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — Utah Highway Patrol has released dash cam footage of a trooper responding to an elderly wrong-way driver on I-15 on Sunday.

According to UHP, on Sunday, Sergeant Ball responded to multiple calls about a car driving the wrong way on I-15. The driver was still headed in the wrong direction on the emergency shoulder when Ball arrived on scene.

On the dash cam video, Ball can be seen intervening by colliding with the car. It then came to a stop. The collision appears to have torn a tire from the other car, and while Ball suffered minor injuries, no one else was seriously hurt.

In another dash cam video sent in by a viewer, the car can be seen driving the wrong way in the HOV lane. A truck ahead changes lanes to avoid being hit, and so does the driver of the car with the dash cam. The car driving the wrong way does not react or change course in any way.

Reportedly, the elderly driver was confused and did not realize just how much danger they were in.

UHP used this incident as an opportunity to remind the public to talk to their older family members about their driving abilities. “If you notice confusion or difficulty navigating, it may be time to reassess whether it’s safe for them to be driving. Having that conversation could prevent a tragedy,” UHP wrote in a social media post.
