The boy was shot in his lower leg and “bleeding profusely,” leading to a Redlands police officer having to apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding before paramedics arrived on scene.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Orange Street and Union Avenue, according to the Redlands Police Department.
According to both witnesses and the victim, the teen was walking on Orange Street when a gray sedan stopped in the middle of the road. The driver called out to the teen before pulling out a firearm and shooting him in the leg.
The suspect vehicle then fled the scene prior to police arriving.
A Redlands police officer helped stop the bleeding until the boy could be taken to a local hospital by ambulance. He was expected to survive.
The investigation remains ongoing, but police have recovered a spent 9mm cartridge from the scene.
Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact detectives with the Redlands Police Department by calling the dispatch center at 909-798-7681 ext. 1. Anonymous tips can also be provided online.
