The incident occurred on Wednesday after the man challenged the 16-year-old to a fight outside Barbara Phelps County High School on West Park Avenue in Redlands, according to the Redlands Police Department.
“The suspect was on school grounds outside of the closed campus gates, charging his phone, when staff at the school asked him to leave,” police said.
He then got into an argument with the teen and challenged the student to a fight. The student was injured during the physical altercation, police said.
The suspect fled the scene but was located by officers nearby. “While taking him into custody, the suspect struggled, causing minor injuries to one officer, before he was ultimately detained,” police said.
The man was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
