JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade announced his retirement during the City Council meeting on August 26, 2025.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn said Wade has served the City of Jackson with “unwavering dedication” for nearly 30 years.

“Chief Wade leaves an indelible legacy of integrity, commitment, and visionary leadership,” said Horhn. “The citizens of Jackson are safer and our police department is stronger because of his vision and service. On behalf of our city, I wish Chief Wade the very best as he enters his well-earned retirement.”

City officials said Wade’s leadership saw substantial reductions in major crime rates, contributing to greater public safety and a stronger sense of security throughout the city.

Horhn also announced that Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones will serve as interim chief of police for the City of Jackson during the transition.

“I am honored to accept the role of Interim Chief of Police for the Jackson Police Department during this important transitional period. I do so with humility, a deep respect for the men and women of JPD, and a steadfast commitment to public safety in our capital city,” said Jones.

The sheriff said he has no plans to permanently hold the position of Chief of Police.

Former U.S. Marshall George White and Former Chief of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Colonel Charles Haynes will lead a Law Enforcement Task Force that will conduct a nationwide search for the next chief, a process expected to last between 30 and 60 days.

“I am grateful to Sheriff Tyree Jones for his willingness to step into this interim role,” said Horhn. “Sheriff Jones brings respected experience to this assignment. His commitment will help guide our city during the task force search and address the critical public safety issues facing Jackson.”
