Indiana Opens Season Against Old Dominion; Cignetti Stresses Preparation and Urgency

Written from press release

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University football coach Curt Cignetti said Monday that his team must bring “a total gear shift” in intensity as the Hoosiers prepare for their season opener against Old Dominion on Saturday.

Speaking at his weekly press conference, Cignetti praised Old Dominion as a dangerous opponent, citing close losses last season and past upsets over Power Five programs. He noted the Monarchs nearly beat South Carolina in last year’s opener, falling 23-19 after two costly late fumbles.

“All but one of Old Dominion’s losses last year were by one score or less,” Cignetti said. “They’ve beaten Virginia Tech twice in recent history, so we’ve got to be ready to go.”

Quarterback and leadership

Cignetti expressed confidence in transfer quarterback Fernando, who will make his IU debut this weekend. While he has not yet faced game-day pressure in Bloomington, Cignetti said experience and performance will determine leadership.
“You lead through your actions,” Cignetti said. “There’s nothing like positive performance to establish yourself as a leader.”

Offensive line and running backs

Cignetti praised his offensive line as an experienced, tough unit capable of adapting quickly. He also said IU will continue its tradition of rotating backs, with Antwain Littleton II, Trent Black and Joshua Beebe expected to share carries in Week 1.

Old Dominion challenges

The coach pointed to Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph—last year’s Sun Belt leader in total yards—as a dual threat. He also highlighted the return of linebacker Jason Henderson, who led the nation in tackles in 2023 before missing most of last season with an injury.
“They spread you out, they run the ball well, and the quarterback can beat you with his legs and his arm,” Cignetti said. “Defensively, they give you different looks out of their three-three scheme. It’s a real challenge.”

Team health and focus

Cignetti said the Hoosiers are in good shape physically, with only minor injuries during camp. He credited strength coach Derek Owings for keeping the team prepared and emphasized the importance of focus now that camp is over.
“Camp is important, but now it’s time to go to war,” Cignetti said. “It’s serious business now.”

Indiana kicks off the 2025 season against Old Dominion at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington on Saturday.
