Murray joined the Eagles PR department in 1969 and was named GM by former Birds Owner Leonard Tose in 1972. As longtime Eagles fans remember, the team was pretty bad in those days. But in 1976, Murray hired UCLA Head Coach Dick Vermeil, and things started turning around.
Vermeil led the Eagles to an appearance in Super Bowl XV in January 1981. Murray was the Birds GM through the 1981 season. He launched a sports promotions firm after leaving the Eagles.
Perhaps his biggest contribution and certainly his legacy is his founding of The Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House became a home away from home for families whose kids had to be treated at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
There are now Ronald McDonald Houses all across the country. Donations can be made to support The Ronald McDonald House in Philadelphia in honor of Murray online.
