Chicago police say the blaze erupted just after 10 p.m. at a building in the 1700 block of North Artesian Avenue, in Logan Square.
Police and fire crews were initially called to the scene following a report of a residential fire and when they arrived, they found the building engulfed in flames.
Crews were eventually able to stamp out the fire, but officers said 12 residents, including seven adults and five children, were displaced.
Officers said that while displaced, all of the residents were able to escape the burning building without injury.
Currently, it is unclear what sparked the fire and authorities say an investigation is now underway.
Police say the Red Cross was made aware and will reach out to those impacted by the fire.
