CHP was first alerted at 12:38 a.m. to the wrong-way vehicle, a Toyota Camry, driving northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 17, south of Santa Cruz Avenue. At that time, the Toyota drove another vehicle off the roadway as it attempted to avoid a collision, authorities said.
Two minutes later, CHP officers learned that the Toyota had been involved in a head-on crash with a Honda Del Sol, and subsequently crashed into a Honda Civic.
The driver of the Del Sol suffered major injuries in the collision and was rushed to a local hospital. The driver of the Civic was hospitalized with moderate injuries.
A 43-year-old San Jose woman, who was the passenger in the Toyota, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to authorities. The driver, a 44-year-old San Jose man, had major injuries.
“The driver of the Toyota was believed to be driving while under the influence,” CHP said. “It is not known where the Toyota entered State Route 17 the wrong way.”
Authorities did not release any identities in the crash and no arrest was announced.
Witnesses to the fatal crash or anyone with information is asked to contact the San Jose CHP Area Office at 408-961-0900.
