
On Friday, Aug. 22, a chemical release and fire was reported to Tangipahoa Parish authorities around 12:50 p.m. The incident took over 35 agencies, including 20 fire departments, to get the situation under control.
As a result, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported that Highway 51 at Highway 10 in Roseland was closed with drivers advised to find alternate routes.
Federal, state and local partners decided on Monday, Aug. 25, to reduce the evacuation zone from a one-mile radius to the roads and area closest to the incident site.
Road closures remain in effect for the following areas:
- LA Hwy 10 – From U.S. Hwy 51 to E. Russell Town Road
- US Hwy 51 – From LA Hwy 1048 to North Street
- LA Hwy 1048 – From a U.S. Hwy 51 to Mt. Gillion Church Road
Alternate routes for commercial vehicle are:
- LA Hwy 10 West to LA Hwy 1058 North
- LA Hwy 10 East to US Hwy 51 South (Purina Mill)
Officials with the Tangipahoa Parish School System announced that Roseland Montessori will resume classes on Tuesday, Aug. 26.
Due to the ongoing presence of responders and the clean up efforts, the public is asked to continue exercising caution in the area.
