Police responding to ‘active situation’ in Park City, shelter-in-place order issued

Update

PARK CITY, Utah (ABC4) — A suspect is in custody after a man fired shots from within the Park City Gun Club and fled from officers in a vehicle Sunday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

At around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 24, Summit County deputies responded to an alarm activation at the Park City Gun Club, located on Forestdale Drive. Upon arrival, they heard what they believed to be gunshots from inside the building.

Deputies then witnessed multiple shots being fired from inside the building toward outside. A man exited the building and got into a vehicle. Deputies attempted a traffic stop but the suspect fled, leading to a pursuit.

The suspect fled to the area of Trailside Bike Park, where he crashed. He then refused deputies’ commands to surrender, leading to a SWAT standoff that lasted around an hour and twenty minutes.

“The suspect, a male in his forties and a Utah resident, ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody,” a press release from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office states. “Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured during the incident.”

One deputy sustained minor injuries, possibly from a bullet ricochet or flying debris while outside the gun club, police said. Law enforcement did not fire any shots during this incident.

The shelter-in-place order has been lifted.
