SCSU sells historic Selke Field

After being put on the market earlier this year, Selke Field in St. Cloud will have new owners and a new purpose.

St. Cloud State announced the sale on Friday, stating the Central Minnesota Youth Soccer Association(CMYSA) had purchased the field for $350,000.

“We are thrilled a community partner like CMYSA could purchase a facility we were no longer using,” interim SCSU President Larry Dietz said. “We have confidence that this historical site can have a bright future under new ownership.”

Selke Field served as an off-campus facility for St. Cloud State since the 1930s, constructed during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration.

The field was named after the university’s longest-serving president, George Selke, who served St. Cloud State from 1927 until 1943.

Since opening, the field has served a variety of purposes, hosting multiple athletic events and commencement ceremonies, and was recently used by St. Cloud State’s softball team in 2024.

St. Cloud State said the money used to purchase the field will be reinvested into facility upgrades to other locations on the St. Cloud State campus.

The field’s new owners, CMYSA, were founded in 1981, and currently provide programming for 1,100 kids each year, fielding around 25 teams for sports competition. Selke Field was frequently rented by the organization in the past, but now it will be their permanent home for soccer games.

Before it’s ready, the field will need to undergo some renovations. CMYSA said its priority is to assess and repair a 3,000-foot granite wall that surrounds the property. In addition, field maintenance, facility, and parking lot upgrades are also planned.
