IU Asian Culture Center kicks off fall with open house, cultural events

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University’s Asian Culture Center will welcome students back to campus Friday with its annual open house and information fair, launching a semester packed with cultural programming and student engagement opportunities.

The reception runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at the ACC, 807 E. 10th St., and will feature food, games, and informational tables from student groups. Organizers said the event is designed to introduce students to the center’s services and create connections among peers.

“We want students to think of the Asian Culture Center as their second home,” the center said in its announcement.

Throughout the semester, the ACC will host a variety of cultural and educational events, including:

  • Let’s Chat and Make Henna at First Thursdays — Sept. 4 at the Fine Arts Plaza, with free henna tattoos, games, and conversations on student life and current events.
  • Mahjong Mondays — beginning Sept. 8, weekly from 4 to 6 p.m. at the ACC, offering students a chance to learn the traditional Chinese game and meet new friends.
  • Asian Cultures Around Campus featuring Monthly Henna — Sept. 16, Oct. 14, Nov. 4, and Dec. 9 at the ACC, with lessons on mehendi, the Indian art of applying henna.
  • Who are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders? — Sept. 19 at noon, a lunch discussion on immigration history and identity in America.
  • ACC Book Club — monthly starting Sept. 24, discussing Anthony Veasna So’s Afterparties, a short story collection exploring Cambodian American identity and generational trauma.

The center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and encourages students to RSVP for events via IU’s beINvolved platform.
