IU Cinema Marks 15 Years With Yearlong Celebration of Film and Community

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University Cinema is celebrating 15 years of “movie magic” with a yearlong slate of special programming, filmmaker visits, and events that highlight the venue’s role as a nationally recognized hub for film culture.

From now through summer 2026, the Cinema will commemorate its anniversary with guest appearances by acclaimed directors and actors, community-focused screenings, and a once-in-a-lifetime giveaway granting free admission for the next 15 years to a handful of lucky moviegoers.

Since opening its doors in 2011, IU Cinema has distributed more than 366,000 tickets across 3,500 programs, hosting hundreds of film workers, scholars, and artists from around the world. Beyond traditional screenings, the Cinema has opened its auditorium to DJs, conferences, choirs, dance troupes, and student filmmakers—serving as a crossroads of art, scholarship, and community in Bloomington.

Honoring Independent Film and Midwest Creativity

In recognition of its ongoing commitment to independent film, the Cinema’s fall lineup features rising indie filmmakers Delaney Buffett, Ian Bell, and Alex Megaro as part of the Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Series. Earlier this semester, in partnership with IU’s Black Film Center & Archive, the Cinema welcomed Julie Dash, the trailblazing filmmaker behind Daughters of the Dust and the first Black woman to direct a theatrically released feature film in the United States.

The celebration continues in spring 2026 with events spotlighting the Midwest’s growing influence in independent filmmaking. Guests will include Academy Award-nominated actor and director Michael Shannon, producer and writer Brett Neveu, and director Jennifer Reeder. The Cinema will also present “Hoosiers on Screen,” a four-film marathon celebrating Indiana-born actors and the state’s impact on film history.

Campus Connections and Cultural Legacy

IU Cinema’s programming remains deeply intertwined with the university’s intellectual and artistic life. Upcoming events include a celebration of Professor Joan Hawkins, a visit from IU alum and producer Mike Farah, and a collaboration with IU Libraries marking Jane Austen’s 250th birthday.

The Cinema will also host the regional premiere of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, featuring its acclaimed composer Nathan Johnson, further underscoring IU’s connection to contemporary film culture.

Golden Ticket Giveaway and Summer Finale

IU Cinema’s official birthday will be marked on January 13, 2026, with a “secret screening” offering audience members the chance to win the coveted IU Cinema Golden Ticket. From now through January 12, patrons can guess the mystery film’s title; the first 15 correct entries will win free admission to any IU Cinema screening for the next 15 years.

The anniversary celebration will conclude with a summer series titled “15 Years, 15 Hits,” featuring a handpicked selection of favorite films from the Cinema’s archives—chosen by its staff to represent the venue’s eclectic and genre-spanning history.
