Staff report
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — August 22, 2025
Emergency crews responded Friday evening after a person was reported struck by a freight train on Bloomington’s west side.
A train was stopped on the tracks between West Third Street and Liberty Drive around 5:30 p.m. after reports of a possible pedestrian being hit by an Indiana Railroad train. Scanner traffic indicated first responders requested a coroner and used a side-by-side vehicle to take an injured person from the scene behind the AMC Classic 12 theater and nearby apartments.
As of late Friday, authorities had not confirmed a fatality. The train remained halted on the tracks as crews worked at the scene.
The circumstances of the incident remain unclear. Officials have repeatedly warned the public about the dangers of walking on or near train tracks, which is both illegal and extremely hazardous. Trains cannot stop quickly, and in recent years, Bloomington has seen multiple fatalities involving pedestrians on the tracks on the west side of the city.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
