West Mahanoy adopts noise ordinance updates

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Township supervisors here ratified a noise ordinance update this week.

West Mahanoy Township voted to advertise the updates at the July meeting and formally adopted them at the August meeting by a 3-0 vote.

The ordinance now prohibits music to be played loud enough “that it would be found by a reasonable person of ordinary sensibilities to interfere with the peace, comfort, or normal activities of individuals in any residents, business, or public area on adjacent or nearby properties, regardless of time of day.”

It also bans the same from vehicles or a portable source.

Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin said he believed the noise ordinance had previously been geared towards construction noise and similar in the overnight hours.

“It never said anything about the music,” Martin said. “Now we have that adopted so it gives our police department a little more ammunition.”

In other business, supervisors voted to adopt the Schuylkill County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan, to allow the Northern Schuylkill Council of Governments to move to quarterly meetings, and a raise for a road crew worker who completed his probationary period.
