Borough, township remind residents: no open burning

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Officials in two area communities are reminding residents of their year-round open burning bans.

Both Shenandoah borough and West Mahanoy Township have ordinances banning open burning and regulating grills.

Borough Police issued a reminder earlier this week, sharing the ordinance which was passed in 2015.

According to that ordinance, outdoor fires and fire pits are not permitted without a special burn permit from the borough fire chief.

The ordinance also prohibits the use of a charcoal or propane grill inside a building, on a porch, or within 10 feet of a building. Grills are also not permitted on a public sidewalk.

Violation of the ordinance could come with a fine up to $1,000, court costs, and a jail term of no more than 30 days.

West Mahanoy Township has a similar ordinance, which was a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s regular township supervisors meeting.

Code Enforcement Officer Mark Pronio reminded residents that they could also face a $1,000 fine, or more in the event of a drought.

Supervisors Chairman Paul “Pepper” Martin said a Lost Creek #2 man had been cited under the ordinance for burning trash across from his home.
