NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department made an arrest in a fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist.
Around 9 p.m. on June 14, NOPD officers responded to the scene of the crash near the intersection of North Interstate 10 service road and Bundy Road.
The investigation revealed the female bicyclist was headed west on the service road with another bicyclist when a 2008 Dodge Caravan, driven by 18-year-old Jose Javier Suazo, approached from behind ultimately crashing into her.
Officers said the crash caused the bicyclist to be ejected landing in the road.
She was pronounced dead on the scene but the Suazo allegedly drove off without calling the police or EMS.
Through further investigation, NOPD Traffic Fatality Unit detectives found the vehicle abandoned and burned in an “attempt to destroy evidence.”
On Friday, Aug. 22, Suazo was found, arrested and booked into the Orleans Justice Center on charges of:
- Hit and run driving involving death or serious bodily injury
- Reckless operation of a vehicle
- Obstruction of justice
- Falsifying a police report
Anyone with information on the incident can call the Traffic Fatality Unit at 504-658-6205.
