“We’re in our green grocery in the Lower Ninth Ward. So, we can say we have healthy, fresh food that addresses that food desert issue that’s been happening that’s been in this neighborhood for a long time,” said founder and CEO Rashida Ferdinand.
Addressing the healthy food option needs of the Lower Ninth Ward is but one function of the Sankofa Community Development Corporation.
“Our mission is to build healthy communities, for generations to come. We do land restoration, community health resources and things that are needed to make a community well and holistic,” said Ferdinand.
Along those lines, Sankofa has also developed the Wetland Park and Nature Trail along Florida Avenue. On Saturday morning, Aug. 23, they are hosting an event called “Beyond Recovery: A Green Future Rooted in the Lower Ninth Ward.”
“We’ll be talking about the work that we all are doing together and other respective spaces to really honor the needs to rebuild our community and how we’re investing in housing, of green economic development, of climate resilience and environmental science. So it will be a great opportunity to have a conversation about that,” said Ferdinand.
