Chicago man given 16 years for illegally selling guns to FBI informant

CHICAGO — A Chicago man will spend more than 15 years in federal prison for illegally selling more than a dozen guns to an FBI informant.

Johnathan Burgos, a 33-year-old Chicago resident, has been sentenced to 16 years and eight months in federal prison, Andrew Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, announced Thursday.

In 2020 and 2021, Burgos illegally sold 14 firearms and multiple large-capacity magazines to an individual who was working on behalf of the FBI, Boutros said.

Prosecutors said the sales included several stolen handguns, a gun with a defaced serial number, and a rifle.

During most of the sales, prosecutors said Burgos was on either parole or bond with electronic monitoring stemming from firearm cases in state court.

According to prosecutors, Burgos pleaded guilty to federal firearm charges stemming from the illegal sales earlier this year.

“Defendant’s gun trafficking posed a severe danger to the community,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Mower argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “He personally coordinated each sale and used coded language in phone calls and text messages to mask the illicit nature of his discussions.”

Burgos’ sentence was handed down by Judge Steven Seeger last Friday.

Prosecutors did not provide a booking photo for Burgos.
