The DeRidder Police Department said officers were called to the business around 1:25 p.m. about an unwanted individual. When officers arrived, they found the man intoxicated and uncooperative.
Police said the situation escalated when the suspect became aggressive, attempted to choke an officer and tried to grab the officer’s taser. Employees at the business helped subdue the man until additional officers arrived.
The officer sustained moderate injuries to the neck and face and received treatment. The suspect was not injured.
Michael Darron Smith, 42, of Baker, was arrested on multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, resisting an officer with force or violence, attempted disarming of an officer, operating a vehicle while impaired (second offense), and other related offenses.
Smith was booked into jail, and bond will be set. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
