According to a statement released by DeRidder Police Chief Craig Richard, the incident occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 31. Surveillance footage captured a heavy-set white male driving a small, dark SUV approaching the church from U.S. Highway 171 and departing in the same direction following the attempted arson. Investigators noted the suspect may have suffered minor to moderate burns on his arms and legs during the incident.
As of 2:20 a.m. on June 1, DeRidder detectives confirmed they had identified the suspect and traced him to another parish jail, where he had been booked on unrelated charges not long after the church incident. Detectives stated they have sufficient evidence for an arrest and believe the individual acted alone.
While a full statement will be released after the official arrest is made, investigators issued the update to ease concerns for churchgoers attending services Sunday morning.
The DeRidder Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from the DeRidder Fire Department, Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Anyone with surveillance footage from U.S. Highway 171, LA 26, or LA 112 between midnight and 3 a.m. on May 31 is urged to contact the DeRidder Police Department at (337) 462-8911. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (337) 462-8918 for a potential cash reward.
