Arkansas to implement new field rush policy for 2025 season

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Arkansas fans eager to storm the field after a Razorback win will now have to wait a few minutes before joining the celebration.

Arkansas Athletics announced Wednesday, Aug. 20, it will implement a new field rush policy in 2025 to comply with updated Southeastern Conference rules.

After a victory, a three-minute countdown will appear on the videoboards inside Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. According to the university, the delay is designed to give the visiting team, staff and officials time to safely leave the field.

Once the timer expires, fans will be permitted to enter the field to celebrate with the Razorbacks.

The change comes amid stricter SEC enforcement. Last season, Arkansas was fined $250,000 after fans stormed the field following the Hogs’ 19-14 upset of No. 4 Tennessee. It was the university’s second violation under the league’s policy, with the first coming in November 2023 when the basketball team upset No. 9 Duke.

Because the Tennessee game was a conference matchup, the fine went to the Volunteers. Current SEC fines are $100,000 for a first offense, $250,000 for a second and $500,000 for any after. Starting in 2025, all incidents will draw a $500,000 penalty, paid to the visiting school in league games or the SEC office in non-conference matchups.

“The safety of our student-athletes and the student-athletes from the visiting institution is extremely important to all of us,” Arkansas Vice Chancellor and Athletics Director Hunter Yurachek said in a news release. “By implementing this new policy we are allowing the visiting team to clear the field so our fans can safely join our team … to celebrate the big win.”

Arkansas will debut the new policy during its 2025 season opener against Alabama A&M on Aug. 30.
