BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — One person is dead and two other people were left injured after a short police chase in Baton Rouge Wednesday night ended in a fiery crash.

The Baton Rouge Police Department said a driver refused to stop after an officer tried to stop the car for traffic violations in the Mall City area. A two-minute-long chase took place before a crash at around 10 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 5100 block of Greenwell Springs Road.

Police said a gun that was illegally modified with a machine gun conversion device was thrown out of the car during the chase. The car was traveling westbound on Greenwell Springs Road, and before it reached North Foster Drive, it lost control, ran off the road and hit a water line, a wooden fence and a business, then caught on fire.

BRPD said three people in the car were pulled out to get medical care. The driver, Janae Fieldings, 24, was pronounced dead, and the passengers were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

An investigation is ongoing.
