Police continue search for two suspects after 9-year-old was killed at a CTA Green Line Station

CHICAGO (WGN) — The search for two suspects continued Wednesday after the death of a 9-year-old boy at a CTA Green Line station on Chicago’s West Side was ruled a homicide.

Police sources confirmed that Elijah Flores, 9, was captured on surveillance cameras exiting a Green Line train around 11:15 a.m. on Aug. 10 with a 22-year-old male.

Police said the 22-year-old man was arguing with two other men at the Clinton Station in the 500 block of West Lake Street when, during the argument, the two men chased Elijah and the 22-year-old from the platform.

According to police sources, the 22-year-old picked up Elijah because “he was not keeping up.”

One of the two men then hit the 22-year-old in the back with an object, which caused him and Elijah to fall down a flight of stairs. Police said the 22-year-old landed on top of Elijah, knocking him out and fracturing his skull in the process.

Elijah was taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in critical condition, where he died six days later.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Elijah died from blunt force injuries to the head and ruled his death a homicide.

Elijah’s mom told WGN-TV he loved Karaoke, ladybugs and arts and crafts. She called him “a hero” and said his eyes, heart, liver and lungs will be donated to help save others.

Elijah’s mom added that the 22-year-old man he was with when the attack happened is a family friend.

A GoFundMe page was created to help Elijah’s family cover medical and funeral expenses. As of Wednesday evening, the fundraiser was at a little more than $21,000 of its $24,000 goal.

Police said the two offenders fled on foot, and no one is in custody at this time. Area Three detectives are in charge of the investigation.
