BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A man was arrested on Wednesday after a fire started at a storage unit in Baton Rouge.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department responded to a storage unit facility in the 13000 block of S. Choctaw Drive to a fire on Tuesday.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from one of the buildings. After entering, firefighters found and extinguished the fire, containing it to a single storage unit. BRFD determined the fire was a result of arson. The fire department said the fire caused about $250,000 in damages.

Investigators found and arrested a suspect, Derrick Toran, in connection with the fire. Toran was seen on surveillance at the storage unit. He admitted to being on the property at the time of the fire but denied starting the fire or knowing how it started.

Toran was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of simple arson, simple burglary, criminal trespass, and entry or remaining in place after being forbidden.
