Macoupin Co. law enforcement employees accused of battery after bar altercation

STAUNTON, Ill. (WCIA) — A Macoupin County police officer is no longer employed, and two employees of the sheriff’s office are on administrative leave following an altercation at a bar in Staunton last weekend.

The Macoupin County Sheriff’s Office and the police departments of Staunton and Bunker Hill all published news releases on their Facebook pages about the altercation. Staunton Police said that on Monday, they were contacted by a woman who reported her brother had been battered at Skeeter’s Bar around 1 a.m. on Saturday. The department started an investigation and spoke with the victim.

“After speaking with the victim, it was discovered that three suspects had battered him, and the suspects were identified as Logan Hemp, Joshua Revisky and Jeffery Schoen,” Staunton Police said. “Due to Hemp and Revisky being employees of the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Shawn Kahl was contacted and made aware of the incident. Bunker Hill Police Chief Zach Girth was made aware of the incident as Schoen is a Bunker Hill Police Officer.”

Because their employment presented a conflict of interest, all three suspects were taken to the jail of neighboring Montgomery County. They were booked on charges of mob action and aggravated battery in a public place.

The Sheriff’s Office clarified to WCIA that while Hemp and Revisky are employees of the sheriff’s office, they are not deputies. They’ve been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

The Bunker Hill Police Department, meanwhile, said Schoen is “no longer an officer with the City of Bunker Hill.” They did not say whether Schoen resigned or was fired.

Staunton Police added that the three defendants were later formally charged with aggravated battery in a public place, but not with mob action. Making their first appearance in court on Monday, the three were released with conditions.

The Macoupin County State’s Attorney’s Office indicated on the record that it would be recusing itself from the case and seeking a special prosecutor.

Hemp, Revisky and Schoen are due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 27.
