Anthony Kravanya, coroner, said Nolan Kiel was operating a tractor on Tuesday, just east of Virden’s city limits. Kiel was pronounced dead on the scene around noon.
An autopsy was done on Wednesday. Preliminary autopsy findings indicate that Kiel died from asphyxiation.
Kiel was a student at North Mac High School. The school said counselors will be available until 4 p.m. at the High School Media Center and the Middle School Library. Counselors will also be available “as needed” when students return on Monday.
“Nolan will be remembered by the North Mac community as always possessing a positive attitude and friendly demeanor,” the district said in a statement. “Please keep the Kiel family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this time of grief.”
The Virden Fire Department, Virden Police Department, Prairieland Ambulance Service, Girard Fire Department, Auburn Fire Department and the Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident on Tuesday.
The Macoupin County Sheriff’s Department and The Macoupin County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
