BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — A Louisiana district judge blocked East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards’ attempt to combine the fire department and emergency medical services.

Judge Ronald Johnson granted a temporary restraining order that stops the Baton Rouge Fire and Police Municipal Civil Service Board from voting on the proposal, which had been scheduled for Monday, according to The Advocate.

Edwards shared a statement after the injunction was filed.

“We respect the legal process and we look forward to a resolution that best serves the residents of East Baton Rouge Parish.”

In June, Edwards announced the merger between the two entities to reduce duplicates in administrative and operational areas and to strengthen the frontlines.

BRFD Chief Michael Kimble said service would remain the same for all areas. No layoffs were part of the merger.

This is a developing story.
