In what will be its second-largest investment in company history, GE Appliances has earmarked $3 billion for U.S. capital improvements and product development over the next five years.
The investment, second only in size to the creation of the company’s Appliance Park headquarters in 1950s Louisville, will expand its air conditioning and water heating product lines, further modernize 11 manufacturing plants across five states with new automation and capital equipment, and create more than 1,000 new jobs.
“We are defining the future of manufacturing at GE Appliances by investing in our plants, people and communities,” said President/CEO Kevin Nolan. “No other appliance company over the last decade has invested more in U.S. manufacturing than we have, and our $3 billion, five-year plan shows that our commitment to U.S. manufacturing will continue into the future.”
The first phase of investments will begin with factory expansions and new production lines at GE plants in Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. This includes six 22-cubic-foot top-freezer models produced in the company’s refrigerator plant in Decatur, Ala.; reshoring gas range production from Mexico to GE’s Roper Corp. plant in Lafayette, Ga.; and doubling the output of the vendor’s water heater plant in Camden, S.C.
Upon completion of the five-year plan, GE will have invested $6.5 billion across its U.S. manufacturing plants and national distribution network since 2016, the company said.
