Acting U.S. Attorney Ellison C. Travis said that Beverly Watson McNabb entered her guilty plea to one count of theft of government funds. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and supervised release.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) said that McNabb could access the bank account for R.W., her elderly relative. R.W. received retirement benefits from Social Security and died on Dec. 5, 2015, but the benefits continued to be deposited into the account.
McNabb used the funds for personal expenses from December 2015 to April 2020, according to the DOJ. This included a wedding dress, groceries, restaurant bills and prison commissary items for friends. She also made many cash withdrawals.
Sentencing will be determined at a later date.
